While we often put a lot of design research, thought, and money into our general living spaces in our homes, there is one room that is usually the heart of every house. This room is the kitchen. Think about it. Where do you find most guests gathering when you host your get-togethers? In the kitchen! From prepping meals for your family to serving guests at Easter brunch, a lot happens in the kitchen. This is why a great kitchen design is so important! The kitchen layout should help you as you prep, prepare, and serve meals to your family and friends. Here are several unique kitchen designs that will help you create the perfect space for your home.
Minimalist Apartment Kitchen
“Everything is about proportion and scale. That’s why I fell in love with this townhouse: It’s not enormous, but the proportions are right,” explains homeowner Jeffrey Kalinsky.
Small kitchens can still be stylish and memorable when done right. The streamlined, light colored kitchen cabinetry by Bulthaup reflects light and makes the kitchen layout appear larger. The shiny terrazzo floor also adds to the look. The mid-century modern appeal is further enhanced by the Corian countertop and sink, the fittings by Vola, and the Bega light fixture.
In contrast to the minimalist kitchen featured above, this 19th century restored home’s kitchen is an example of unique kitchen designs where more is better. This stunning San Francisco home took four years of work to renovate, but the result was worth the wait for the owners.
The kitchen offers ample seating for family and friends. Midcentury French armchairs look lovely next to a Hans Wegner table. The kitchen island is flanked by barstools from Lucca Studio. An elegant home requires elegant light fixtures, and the kitchen is no exception. The Vilhelm Lauritzen chandelier is perfect for this kitchen. The flooring by Fox Marble is unique and creates a beautiful pattern on the floor.
Moroccan Inspired Minimalism
This unique kitchen is in performance artist’s Martin von Haselberg’s pool house. One can only imagine what the kitchen in his main house might look like! Martin von Haselberg created a charming space for family and guests to enjoy the pool on his 110-acre estate. The floors are an eye-catching part of this kitchen layout.
“I was thinking of painted floors, and I told Nancy, ‘Let’s do something joyful and very feminine.’ When she suggested pink, I was all in,” he says.
The pop of color pairs beautifully with the creamy white and washed seafoam painted walls. The kitchen island top is custom painted white ash. The cut-outs above the cabinetry lend to the Moroccan themed of the pool house kitchen.
Casual, Comfortable, and Stylish
For families with young children, the kitchen can also become a space for shared activities that go far beyond just cooking. Experiments, craft projects, and homework are often completed at the kitchen island. Designer Alison Palevsky had her two young sons in mind as she created unique kitchen designs in her home. The spaces seamlessly flow into each other, tied together by the stunning large Carrara marble tiles by Walker Zanger. The 1920s pendant light, as well as the charming bar stools, add to the informal yet polished look of this cheery and bright kitchen.
