Scandinavian Design: 4 New Brands Leading the Way

It is difficult to discuss modern interior design trends without spending a lengthy amount of time on Scandinavian design. While this style is best known from its prominence since World War II, it actually originated in the late 19th century. Combining minimalism, simplicity, and functionality, the Scandinavian design remains quite popular to this day. If you’re a fan of this style, here are four new Scandinavian brands promising to be the future of style.

HAY

In 2002 Danish brand HAY hit the design scene. Over the last 17 years, the brand has created a wide range of modern, functional elements for the home. The brand collaborates with many up and coming Nordic designers and studios to offer an eclectic range of pieces. From furniture to kitchenware, the HAY Scandinavian design aesthetic is playful, high quality, and also eye-pleasing.

HAY was founded in 2002 with the ambition to create contemporary furniture with an eye for modern living and sophisticated industrial manufacturing. That remains our ambition today. Through our commitment to the design and production of furniture and accessories with an international appeal we strive to make good design accessible to the largest possible audience.

In just a decade, ferm Living has established itself as another frontrunner among Scandinavian brands. The brand adds a contemporary spin on classic Nordic design elements. They make even the most utilitarian items in the home, such as laundry racks, also look sleek and modern.

Our soft forms, rich textures and deep colours allow you to create an authentic and composed atmosphere, while avant-garde shapes, striking patterns and curious details add a touch of the unexpected. From our base in Copenhagen, we work with artisans around the world, fusing our Scandinavian mindset with global skills and traditions. We take our responsibility to people and the planet seriously, and expect the same of our partners. We create collections of furniture, accessories and lighting, so you can create space to feel comfortably you.

After working for other Scandinavian brands for 30 years, husband and wife duo Mia and Torben Koed launched WOUD in 2014. The brand specializes in a unique take on Nordic design. They also specialize in simplicity, clean shapes, and functionality.

We offer a high range of quality furniture and interior design. Each of our designs are handpicked to ensure that it shares and strengthens our vision of creating a timeless design where every product has a meaning, a purpose, and a function. We collaborate with upcoming talents and established designers from a wide range of countries. Each of the designers have individual expressions – but all with a coherent modern interpretation of the Scandinavian design heritage.

Northern

Finally, design house Northern made a splash with its debut collection at the 2018 Stockholm Design Week. The brand grew out of the Oslo-based firm Northern Light.

Northern’s debut collection is simplicity at its best, spelled out in streamlined designs that are fun to combine and easy to clash and contrast. Smoked wood, twilight colours and strong silhouettes create subdued moods, while subtle geometries and classic sensibilities add an elegant touch. We see the interior as a flexible, creative space, and make multifunctional products that are unified in style, as well as in spirit. Our creative reach goes beyond our Norwegian heritage to meet the modern need for laid-back luxury and cutting-edge cool. Northern’s designs can energise and inspire, create a relaxing mood, or set the scene for a soothing backdrop. Designed with the potential to make any setting unique, Northern’s products add atmosphere as they reveal a new vision for Nordic style.
